What a deal !!

I saw a rather disturbing television commercial the other day that makes me a little angrier every time I think about it. As we all know, our country is blessed with a disproportionate number of lawyers ready to take your case if you injure yourself trying to break into someone’s home or automobile, or if you may have been exposed to gamma rays from your child’s G.I. Joe figures, or any such situation that leads them to believe they can convince a judge to award you zillions of dollars for your pain and suffering, thusly awarding him or her with a percentage equal to the  gross  national product of a third world country. Many people call these  “servants of the people”  “ambulance chasers”.  As an aside, I’m not one of those people, but my names and descriptions shall go unheard for fear of damaging delicate ears.

Another “servant of the people” has emerged from the depths, ready and willing to show you how to escape having to pay a large percentage of the taxes one is expected to pay to help provide the many things that set us above many other countries- like paved roads, police protection, government services for the less fortunate;you know, little things that wouldn’t exist were it not for the taxes we pay. I don’t like it any more than anyone else, but it’s a part of our life. As the old saying goes: “There are two sure things: You die, and you pay taxes.” Apparently, these self-serving individuals are willing, for a price, to manipulate the IRS in such a way as to reduce your tax debt to such a level that you would be paying “pennies on the dollar”.(from the commercial). My first question is: Why weren’t the taxes paid to begin with? How many years has this person in need of their help let his/her taxes go unpaid? Why? I happen to know that you are penalized for being late to pay your county and town taxes. I’ve been penalized before, as have millions of others. My wife and I live on a fixed income, and the money isn’t exactly rolling in. We live relatively modestly and are taxed accordingly. We pay the taxes, as does most everyone else, because we live within our means. Maybe those who
owe tens of thousands in back taxes aren’t. Now we have these geniuses telling them they don’t have to act like responsible taxpayers and pay when they should, but let them pile up until they couldn’t pay them even if they wanted to. That’s when they step in, work their “magic”, use their “former IRS agents” to cook a few numbers, and “PRESTO!!”. You walk away paying your government “pennies on the dollar”, and the helpful hero takes home a sizable amount of money that should be in government coffers instead of his sweaty little palms. This sounds like a profitable venture for both sides, with the only loser being the government. I think I’ll continue to pay my taxes as I should-it’s the only right thing to do. Besides, I’d much rather my government have all the tax money than to think I was helping to buy some jerk a condo in the Bahamas.

The New American Way?

We’ve all heard the saying “Money is the root of all evil” since we were children. Now, I wonder how many people have put any thought into this age old commentary. Without thinking too much on the subject, it’s easy enough to get the meaning. Money has caused innumerable problems for innumerable people. Simplistic, but true.
However, I find that the more thought I put into those brief words, the more they relate to almost every thing that is wrong in our country today. Even as children, we learn the “importance” of money and the power it wields. Although many of us are taught that “Money isn’t everything”, we still find ourselves developing the mindset that money is of  vast importance to our everyday existence. It is my belief that we, as Americans, have become so accustomed to basing our entire lives around money that we don’t even realize what is becoming of us. I think most of us don’t even consider the fact that we use money as a deciding factor in almost every aspect of our lives. Many important decisions in our lives are made only after considering the impact money will have on the particular situation. For the majority of us, this is a sad necessity, for most of us have to control the amount of money to be dispersed for a specific reason because it affects so many other parts of our lives. To some others, the importance lies in the power that their money provides. In this age of excess, money governs many people’s lives because of the mindset that more money means more power.
Our government has become the prime example of this mindset. Obviously, our leaders are intent on enriching themselves and their allies with their numerous “good ol’ boys” deals, as witnessed in the war in Iraq. Many duties performed by our armed services, such as maintenance of equipment, have been turned over to companies such as Halliburton and Brown and Root, to name a couple. As we know, our second in command was CEO of Halliburton before deciding to run for the vice presidency. As we also know, Brown and Root is a subsidiary of the giant corporation Halliburton. While no legal action has been taken, it has been reported that the vice president, although claiming to have severed all ties, has made huge personal profits from the company since being elected. Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, has also profited from his power. Some five months after securing federal funds totaling $207 million for the “Prairie Parkway” in his home state of Illinois, he sold 138 acres of land he had owned for three years for a tidy $2 million profit.
Our government has used the direct input from leaders in the oil and energy industries to design energy policies which proved to be a great boon for them, while costing consumers dearly. It seems that our government is making the rules as they go, and as needed to fit the particular situation. These examples merely scratch the surface. There are many accounts of government decisions made specifically to benefit one or more powerful Washington entities. While claiming to make decisions for the benefit of the American public, our leaders regularly favor the wealthy individuals and corporations who had such a large part in them being elected to high public office. Those in Washington who haven’t yet attained the power of the elite are impotent as far as questioning the ethics of their “superiors”. Fearing for their political life, they meekly stand aside and let the huge power brokers have their way.
This behavior transcends the political arena, however, and affects working peoples’ lives as well. “Money talks”. We, as a nation, are consumed with greed. As never before, we value money as the sole reason for many of our actions. Many of us are constantly on the lookout for ways to gain a monetary edge over our  fellow man. Any weakness displayed by someone will surely result in another trying to take advantage of the situation. We are many times rewarded for trusting others by being scammed or robbed by those who would  consider trust as a weakness. Ethics are thrown aside when money is to be gained. Many of us care little, if any, about the repercussions of our dishonest actions. Deals made on a handshake are a thing of the past. We are unable to trust the other person to honor his word that he will fulfill his end of the deal. Documents are filled with page upon page of rules and disclaimers  designed to protect  one of us from the other. Premarital agreements are reached to ensure that one will not take the other’s precious money or belongings. I suppose this one escapes me more than others. I have always believed that if there wasn’t complete trust in a relationship, it was doomed.
Our great country is being bought by such nations as China. Our giant companies are continually moving operations to other countries in order to balloon their profits using work forces that are paid only minimal amounts for working long hours in deplorable conditions. This seems not to matter to the corporations because their bottom line is growing by leaps and bounds. The fact that American jobs are lost, many times ruining people’s lives, means virtually nothing to the wealthy executives because they are, many times, paid according to their performance. Obviously, the more the company makes, the more the executives make and the larger their year end bonus will be. It seems to me that many executives have little or no conscience while the big money is rolling in. Life is good. Those  who are unfortunate enough to have to work for the miniscule wages are of little importance as long as they keep producing. Those American workers left without jobs to support their families are equally unimportant. Greed has a way of changing once decent people into money making machines with no respect for anyone or anything unless  there is money to be made.
As Americans, we need to step back and look at ourselves from another perspective. We have traded our
old ways  of respecting each other and trusting each other for the “what have you done for me lately” and “what  can you  do for me?” attitudes. If this is progress, I’ve had all I want ,thank you

A letter to congress

Most members of Congress say they are against escalation of the war. If this is truly the case, the vote should make that very clear. Sadly, some speak one way and act another way.
Our lawmakers need to stand up and be heard. You are the only “checks and balances” we have when it comes to the presidents ideas about the war. It has been proven that,with all the intelligence surrounding him, he still seems to think he knows what is best.We don’t need what is best for Halliburton and the other hand picked
companies getting richer in Iraq, we need what is best for our troops and our country. With the billions wasted already, we have yet to provide our soldiers with all the armor and equipment to make it safer for them. That is sad,folks.
The last election showed how Americans feel about escalating the war. As “servants” of the people, it seems you would want to make the peoples’ desires become reality and do your part to get the troops redeployed. We voters have proven that we have a voice and we want that voice heard. Maybe by the next election we will know who hears and who doesn’t.

I support the House resolution opposing the surge in troops in Iraq.I
think the time has come to throw up our hands and say"If you don't want
us
here, just say goodbye." Our troops would be much better utilized in
other
places in the world-for instance, here guarding our borders,ports, and
airports to stop potential terrorists from reaching the heart of our
country.Homeland Security has failed miserably so far, so our military
needs to take up the slack and fill the gaps.A civil war in Iraq is
almost
inevitable-some say it has already started. After beginning our
democracy,
we soon were in the midst of a civil war, and in the long run, it made
us
stronger. Perhaps the same could happen in Iraq if not for the outside
influences.The oil in Iraq constitutes but a fraction of our oil
consumption,which leads me to believe that our reasons for remaining
there
after the fall of Hussein are maybe something other than setting up a
democracy. I suppose that when Halliburton and the other handpicked
companies have made enough to suit them, our troops will be coming
home.

Transparency in government

Before the elections, we heard all about “transparency in government”, but saw little, if any. I’m not naive enough to think that transparency would stop corruption in government, but I know it would at least slow it down.. Such a movement is attempting to take wing. Two freshmen “congress people“, Jon Tester from Montana and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, have started the practice of making public their entire working day and who they meet with. By doing this, they want to take away any question marks as to whether they are serving their constituents or not. This concept, unprecedented in government, is the brainchild of an organization known as the Sunlight Foundation, a non partisan group committed to making this practice government wide. According to our Constitution, our government is designed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. I take this to mean that the responsible citizens deserve access to the workings of our government. In my humble opinion, those lawmakers with nothing to hide should embrace this idea so as to prove their legitimacy in the eyes of their constituents. I wonder how many would willingly sign up for this “show and tell”.

It is YOUR DUTY has an AMERICAN, now lets just do it

We of Thee American Party are in our infancy and as such these by-laws are sure to grow
as we obtain new members. Below are some of our beliefs.

Article I
 1.    We of Thee American Party believe that the “party” system has failed. Why do we   
believe this? Because it appears now that Congress and others have brought the
parties to a fight amongst themselves and have lost track of the real reason they are
there. They are there to represent the majority of the Americans of the United
States. This is no longer happening has we can see with the discontent of
Americans toward the acts of the President and the failure of Congress to address
these issues.
2.    We believe that an American should/shall be able to register has an American and  
not be forced to join a party if they so desire. We also realize that this is an
individual right and if a person does want to belong to a party, so be it.
3.    We also believe that if a person does belong to a party, they should still have the
right to vote in any and all primaries. After all, the best candidate may not be in their
party. At present, in most states, if a person joins a party, they are tied to that party.
Of course, at voting time they are allowed to cross party lines. Why should they be
limited to this? We feel that the only way we can get the best candidates to run for
office is to cross party lines even at the primary level. This is our Constitutional
given right and we believe that it must be upheld.
4.    We also uphold the fact that a person does not have to belong to a party to run for
office. If the majority of the people, at the state or federal level, wants to elect this
non-party person so it shall be.
5.    Now comes one of the hardest hurdles’ to overcome and that is the funding for this
non-party or, a person from a lesser-known party, to run for office. We already
know which parties control most of the monies and can fund their candidates. We
think it is our duty to come up with a solution so that an average American with the
backing of a strong majority should receive funds so that the advertising of the
candidates shall be equal even if this means that we must place a ceiling on the
richer parties and also come up with state or federal funding for the non-party or,
lesser known party’s candidate.
6.    We are seeking loyal, honest candidates that have common sense, believe in God  
and will uphold the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and by all means, the majority of
the American public.
7.    We admit that at our infancy right now, we do not have the answers but we feel that,
as we grow, our membership will seek out and find ways to resolve these problems.

Article II
1.    We also believe that any federal office shall be an elected position by the peoples of
the United States. This includes and is not limited to, the Supreme Court Judges, the
Federal Court Judges and other high ranking Federal positions.
2.    We also believe that these positions shall be four year terms. Why do we believe
this?  The Constitution clearly states what happened when the King selected his own
Judges knowing that they would support him and his/her ideology. We see this
happening today and realize that this is Un-constitutional, illegal and must cease.
Judges should be elected on the soul purpose to uphold the Constitution and the Bill
of Rights of a free people of a free country.

Article III
We also uphold the fact that any elected official is not above the law and shall be treated
has any other American when they break our laws.
We also believe that if the government, be it local, state or federal, does not impeach an
elected official that is not adhering to the laws of the land that we, has Americans have the
right to force impeachment ourselves when a certain percent of the population, which is
yet to be determined, deems necessary.

Article IV
1.     We also intend to enforce the Bill of Rights which have been upturned and ignored
for sometime now such as the taking of private property. The Bill of Rights
CLEARLY STATES that the government SHALL NOT TAKE PRIVATE
PROPERTY unless it benefits the majority of Americans. This Right has been
blatantly misused and has always been illegal. We do not ask, but we demand that
this right be reestablished immediately!

Article V
1.       We are also tired of seeing fellow Americans being falsely accused of crimes that
they have not committed. Daily we see Americans arrested and charged with crimes
that they have not committed. However, they spend jail time, they may or may not
be able to afford to pay a bondsman, they may even lose their job, spend hard earned
money for legal fees and in the end, it has been decide that they are innocent and are
released. However, they are still out of the time and money they have spent to prove
themselves innocent without any recourse of or by the accusing legal department.
Some of our fellow Americans go ahead and plead guilty for a crime they did not
commit because they are financially unable to pay the attorney fees or the cost of
fighting outweighs the cost of pleading guilty.
2.       We propose a new check and balance system to keep all legal entities honest. At
this moment of time, the best answer we have is that the legal entity that charges an
American of a crime and that person is found innocent, that legal department/entity,
be it local, state, or federal, must FULLY REIMBURSE this person of ALL
MONIES they have spent to prove themselves innocent! We feel that this action will
cause legal entities to clean up their own act. Why do we feel this way? Because if
officer whomever charges to many innocent people and their department starts
paying out more than they are receiving, we believe that this department will resolve
this problem on their own in their own way. This is called check and balances.

Article VI
   Below are some of the 1st original 12 amendments’ that shall be reinstated to their full
power.
These “Rights” have almost been destroyed, we of Thee United Parties demand
that these rights be reinstated.

Article the third … Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment
of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom
of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Article the fourth … A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the
security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall
not be infringed.

Article the sixth … The right of the people to be secure in their persons,
houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall
not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause,
supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be
searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Article the seventh … No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or
otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand
Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia,
when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be
subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor
shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be
deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall
private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Article the eighth … In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy
the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and
district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have
been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause
of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have
compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the
Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

Article the ninth … In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy
shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and
no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the
United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

Article the tenth … Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive
fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Article the eleventh … The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain
rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the
people.

Article the twelfth … The powers not delegated to the United States by the
Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States
respectively, or to the people.

Article VII
   Below comes right out of the Declaration of Independence, this part tell us it is OUR
DUTY!  Our fore-fathers were well learned and knew what the future held for us today and
they told us what to do.
Now it is time to do it!!

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that
among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just
Powers
from the consent of the governed,
– That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the
Right of the People to alter or
to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its
foundation on such
principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall
seem most
likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
 Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed
for light and
transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind
are
more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves
by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

 But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object
evinces a design
to reduce them under absolute Despotism,
 
 it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards
for their future
security — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and
such is
now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of
Government.
– The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of
repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the
establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let
facts be submitted to a candid world.

Now, we have a new “King”…

new kids in DC

In the short time the Democrats have been in power, they have made genuine attempts to live up to their campaign promises. While this is very pleasing, I celebrate with a bit of cautious optimism. The fact is, there are still many conservative Republicans who may tend to think straight down party lines. If our government is to succeed, this must stop. Although I realize the Dems are talking a good game about being bipartisan, it is up to the people to make sure all politicians know that we are watching-not a few of us, MANY of us. The elections seemed to say that we are tired of the status quo and want changes, but in order to assure those changes will be favorable to the common people,the common people need to continue to monitor the events in Washington that may affect us either directly or indirectly. We as a nation have become almost blase about the way in which our government works. Voter turnout is ridiculously low, most people are prone to ignore issues that don’t immediately have a major effect on them personally, and,sad to say, a large number of Americans seem to know almost NOTHING about our government or those who are charged to manage it. We have to realize that our lawmakers represent US. The decisions they make as individual representatives should be based on the will of the constituents-not their personal opinions. It is OUR DUTY as Americans to be involved in the process. An analogy you might consider: Global Warming. How? Very simple; the most drastic effects of global warming may not occur in my lifetime-I’m not a young man, but I have children and grandchildren that,GOD willing, will be in our world for many decades into the future. Not only do I pray for a cleaner,safer world for them to live in, I also pray for a free world-a free country-a country ruled by the Constitution, not a few individuals with their own agenda. I fear that we could end up in that situation very soon if we let it happen. The last election taught us that we DO have a voice. Now we just need to understand that our voice can be heard even between elections. Those politicians who are willing to listen between elections may very well be the ones staying in Washington more than one term.
